Painting with Adobe Photoshop

Does anyone else paint with Adobe Photoshop?
I do...just not as much as I do with traditional use of brush,  paint and canvas. It is not at all hard to love working with a large space and get into the the organic and natural flow and motion of water and oil bases mediums.

Although, I am will to admit that when it comes to such things as: not having the space available to work, cleaning up after you're done, preserving the mediums in between sessions, and getting high/headaches from certain chemicals...the digital medium is much more preferable.
But, there is the issue of having to learn how to use all the various tools, pallets,  options, etc. (It goes on and on and on.), simply drives the artist who just wants to paint insane. You can't go into PS and just start painting like you are used to. Where is the brush? Brush options? Tolerance? What is all of this? I JUST WANT TO PAINT!
At least that was my experience.

Then came the day when when I realized the power that is Photoshop; LAYERS.
The freedom one could have in using layers is unfathomable!
Such things as: layer adjustment, duplicating layers, color/hue/saturation adjustments, merging, selecting, pasting, and the entire array of options that Photoshop offers makes painting in digital quite enjoyable...especially when combined with a Wacom tablet.
All of this comes in quite handy when you need to have work ready to be published for printed work or digital media. You don't have to deal with all the issues  that come along with shooting an actual painting: mounting, lighting, camera setting, tripods, consistency, to name a few...eventually bringing it into PS to do color adjustments anyway.

Don't get me wrong here though. If the conditions were right I would love to be painting more often. Having a large studio with an abundance of natural light and ventilation and storage, a wall to mount and shoot my work, lamps and cameras, assistants, kitchen, etc etc. would be perfect.

Autodesk Sketchbook Pro

WOAH!!!
It's been over 3 years since I last posted anything here...hey, what can i say? I'VE BEEN BUSY!!! hehehe...
But, now I'm not so busy, again.
So....I've decided to redo my website and manage this here blog.
Yes that means, there will be more work being posted up and hopefully a new website that you all can visit where you may ooh and ahh what work I've done this past 3 years.

Ok, maybe some of you have heard of that kinda new and most EFFIN' AWESOME of programs/app Autodest Sketchbook Pro.
Well, this here skull was my 2nd attempt at using the app, which I drew on my 4" screen of my Samsung Transform Ultra with a regular stylus. No joke. What do you think, cool huh? I LOVE THIS APP!!
...so much that I had to go out and get the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 with it's 8" screen and with it's rocket-ship power and technology, and the S-pen. WAY BETTER than using a regular stylus!
At this point, all the art supplies (drawing, painting, et.) that I have accrued over the past years are now rendered obsolete....or unused till my tablet dies from over use. Even my desk top which has the Sketchbook program is collecting dust...that is, until I start working on my website. I don't use my desktop to illustrate much, because I still like leaning over the pieces that I'm working. Even though I have a tablet on my desktop and can use it proficiently, it's just not as preferable as a touch-screen tablet. The one thing I totally love about this app/program, is that I am able to use the painting technique of layering and lifting quite easily, a technique that I have been using when painting with acrylics.
So yeah, TOTALLY AWESOME.

Ok, enough ranting.
Thanks for visiting and remember: There will be more work being posted here in the next few days and there will be a newly designed website. So come back ok?
Cool, Thanks.

LUCIA'S

This painting was a work of pleasure and love. It was a going -away gift to one of my dearest friend and one of the loveliest of women I've had the pleasure and blessing of  being able to share life with.
Having less than a weeks time to do the painting, I poured every free minute I had into completing this. This was at a time when where I lived lacked a studio or space of any kind to actually do any painting. So for that week I turned my dining room into a studio, just so I could do this.
Symbols and designs inspired from Chinese and Hindu art, has been a strong influence over what I have been using in my paintings in the past decade. Thanks to a wonderful and brilliant professor who taught the Asian Art History Class  that I attended back in 2002, my appreciation and love of Asian art, history, and culture has and continues to grow.
The sand skrit symbols that take up the center of the page is alibata; an ancient and formally lost writing method from the Filipines. Alibata has been slowly brought back into Pinoy culture and can be found commonly on the bodies of Pinoy's as tattoos.
This alibata simply says: LUCIA (lu-s-ya)

To Skin or Not to Skin?

Ok, so I put together this design...and as always, I face the question of what to do with it next. I think it would be a cool tat, for me...maybe not. But I would love for any of my friends to wear it. And then, I'm thinking I should transfer it to a huge ass canvass and just go berserk, but there isn't anywhere at the house to do this.
Also, I've been working on other ideas similar to this, and I've been running across this question quite a bit.
To Skin or Not to Skin?

Just another image I wanted to throw your way.

Title: None 1

These painting are 2 pieces of a trypto...something that I did for my advanced painting class. You know, where 3 painting make up a whole painting. Yeah, that's what it is. Seriously, I had no idea what I was doing here. The teacher forbade me to paint my usual way and was about to force me to paint with spatulas. So I came up it a way to mix the paint on the boards white painting at the same time. The effects are kinda cool.
So where is the 3rd painting?
I never did it. Or finished one.
The 3rd painting, or really the 2nd one was suppose to be a painting depicting living. But, when I attempted to paint something, I really couldn't finish it. Or at least rally come up with a solid image that show living. The other direction I tried taking was showing "Life after death." But again, I couldn't come up with an image. Seriously, what would I really know what that looked like.

Acrylic on mason board.

INTRODUCTION

Variabilis:
is an accumulation of random art work.
With today's accessibility to various blog sites, I decided that it would be a great medium to display and share all the random designs, illustrations, paintings and ( a layman's attempt at...) photography, that I have done over the years.

Most of the work that will be displayed here are works of pleasure.
Some are class projects, but most are personal projects that stem from my love of various cultures (especially mine), reading, film, people, other's art works and stories told.
There is little if any, work that I do that makes a statement of any kind, nor attempts to enlighten anyone.
Rather, most of my work are ideas; representational images...displayed on paper, canvas or created digitally.
Or what some my call, "designs".

I will not be posting any work that I have done professionally on this particular blog.
If you are interested in seeing work that I have done professional, please make your way to: http://www.myspace.com/kione01

I hope you enjoy the imagery and thank you for visiting VARIABLIS; random creativity.
